2021 Latino Legislative Day Agenda

10:00am - 10:05am: Introduction & Welcome

Nina Martinez, Board Chair for Latino Civic Alliance (LCA)


10:05am - 10:20am: Healthcare 

Dr. Leo Morales, Assistant Dean for Healthcare Equity and Quality in the School of Medicine and Co-Director of the Latino Center for Health at the University of Washington


Latinos have borne a disproportionate burden of COVID-related infection and mortality, lagging healthcare, economic or other resources in proportion to the burden of COVID-19 and receipt of vaccination. The states government, public health organizations and healthcare providers addressing the needs of Latino communities in Washington.


10:20am - 10:35am: Crisis

Laura Nichols, Mobile Crisis Program Manager


Understanding the importance of selfcare and accessing mobile services during a crisis.


10:35am - 10:55am: Immigration

Maru Villalpando, Founder of La Resistencia &  Cariño Barragán Talancón, WAISN Policy and Advocacy Manager 


How private immigration corporate centers make   a profit for exploiting immigrants and human rights epidemic in the U.S. The legislative   efforts to shut down Northwest detention center in Tacoma. 


WAISN presents their 2021 Legislative Platform centering the voices of undocumented communities. You will learn more about their efforts to achieve unemployment benefits for undocumented workers and access to state programs, like the healthcare exchange and legal services through the Office of Civil Legal Aid. 


10:55am - 11:05am: Farmworker Rights

Rosalinda Guillen, Executive Director Community to Community


Covid-19 Pandemic impact on farmworkers and families and lack of workplace protections and access to health care and sick leave in WA State. 


11:05am - 11:15am: Labor

Pedro Espinoza, Political Liaison with Regional Northwest Carpenters  


How unions are addressing wage theft and the underground economy. 


11:15am - 11:35am: Hate Crimes

Nina Martinez, Latino Civic Alliance Board Chair & Mat Patashnik, Jewish Federation, Government Relations


Hate and violence is destroying our communities – How LCA has partnered with Jewish leaders to address hate crimes in Washington State.  


11:35am - 11:55am: Education K-12

John Cerna, Toppenish School Superintendent & Dr. Ismael Vivanco, Mount Vernon School Superintendent


The impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in schools, students and parents. The impacts of the pandemic in remote learning and inequalities. Equity tools that parent and students should be aware of.

Javier Joaquin Lopez Casarin - President of NACIN "North America Cities Network" & Carlo Bonfante, Director NACIN "North America Cities Network” 


What a fostering Collaboration between Different Municipalities of the United States and Mexican States strengthen relationships between the countries. Including entities, autonomous constitutional bodies, the Chambers of Deputies and Senators of the Union Congress, the bodies of the Judiciary of the promoting gender equity. 


1:00pm - 1:25pm: Latino Legislators in Olympia

Senator Saldana, Representative Lillian Ortiz, Representative Javier Valdez, Representative Bill Ramos 


Legislators will share challenges and successes in the legislature and how Latinos can organize and recommended policies that will  help improve their communities.


1:25pm - 2:00pm: Keynote Motivational Speaker

Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch, Veteran, Author and Motivational Speaker
